Don’t forget to share your pictures with us using #MaritimeMile on Instagram.
The Flying Angel
A gleaming bronze and stainless-steel angel reaches out from the bow of a ship built at the side of the Mission to Seafarers building. The figure is the worldwide symbol of the Seafarers’ Mission, a religious charity set up in the mid-19th Century, to provide sailors with shelter and comfort. The Angel, designed by local artist Maurice Harron, is captured here in the act of calming the waves.
Find it at Prince’s Dock Street, off Pilot Street and just north of Clarendon Dock.
The Big Fish A.K.A The Salmon of Knowledge
One of Belfast most famous piece of public art and over 10m long! The sculpture was created by Belfast artist John Kindness in 1999 to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan. The shiny blue and white scales are made of hundreds of tiny pieces of ceramic, each depicting moments in Belfast’s history.
Rumour has it, if you kiss the Big Fish, you gain some of its knowledge!
SoundYard
SoundYard is a playful art installation inspired by the sounds of Belfast’s shipyards, located on Queens Quay. The installation is 6 metres tall, 9.6 metres wide and consists of over 500 suspended metal rods hung in circular rings from a steel support structure!
SoundYard is great to shoot at all times of the day, but especially after Dusk when it turns into a stunning light installation, with the metal rods and veil illuminated!
As you walk along Queen’s Quay, keep an eye out for visiting Tall Ships and maybe even spot some wildlife including Sammy the Seal!
SS Nomadic
Capture the world’s last remaining White Star vessel and RMS Titanic’s original tender ship, SS Nomadic. Now restored to her original glory and back home in Belfast’s historic Hamilton Dock.
You may see statues nearby of familiar faces, try to capture SS Nomadic through the face!
Back to the River Photographic Exhibition
Located on Hamilton Dock beside SS Nomadic, the Back to the River exhibition showcases photographs taken by local community neighbourhoods of Belfast’s historic waterfront.
The photographs capture what local residents love about the waterfront, and what makes them feel connected to the area.
Try standing towards the bow of SS Nomadic to capture your MARITIME moment!
Titanic Belfast
No trip to the Maritime Mile is complete without stopping at Titanic Belfast and getting that all important picture at the Titanic Sign. It’s no surprise that Titanic Belfast has been named as one of the most instagrammed tourist attractions in Northern Ireland with over 66k hashtags.
Located outside the building you will find the iconic Titanic sign. Weighing in at 15 tonnes, the same weight as Titanic’s main anchor, it’s becoming a famous backdrop filling up the Insta feed.
Glass of Thrones
Dotted across the Maritime Mile you will find six, ‘Game of Thrones’ stained-glass windows, each depicting the most famous scenes from the hit HBO series.
Look out for the Iron Throne at the bottom of the Slipways that features a stool where you can get a selfie with the window.
Harland and Wolff Cranes
Belfast’s Iconic Duo, Samson & Goliath. Standing at 106 & 96 metres high, they dominate the city’s skyline.
Can you tell which crane is Samson & which is Goliath?
The Great Light
The Great Light is one of the largest optics of its kind ever built in the world and is around 130 years old. Weighing 10 tonnes and measuring 7 metres tall, the optic is a unique maritime heritage object with significance to Belfast's economic, maritime, and industrial past.
Please note, If the blinds are down, it is to protect the lenses from the sun.
HMS Caroline
At the end of the Maritime Mile (or the beginning!) you will find HMS Caroline, the last known surviving warship from one of the largest ever naval battles, 1916’s Battle of Jutland.
Capture the ship from all angles against the stunning backdrop on the Maritime Mile.
